How to create a drama, step by step

From a one-sentence idea to a published series, in ten steps. · 8 min read

Before you start

You need: a phone or computer, an idea, and the AI tools you choose for pictures, video and voice. Dramatubi does not make the video for you; you make it with your own tools, then upload and publish it here.

A short drama is a story told in many very short episodes, usually 1 to 3 minutes each, shot vertically (9:16) so it fills a phone screen.

Step 1. Write the idea in one sentence

Format: WHO wants WHAT, but WHAT STANDS IN THE WAY. Example: “A night-shift nurse finds a letter that proves her new boss is her missing father, but he does not know it.”

If you cannot say it in one sentence, the idea is too big. Make it smaller before you go on.

Step 2. Pick a length and a genre

For a first series, plan 8 to 12 episodes of about 1 to 2 minutes. Dramatubi episodes can be up to 180 seconds each. A small project you finish beats a huge one you abandon.

Pick one genre that fits the idea (romance, thriller, fantasy, comedy and so on). The Genres guide explains what works.

Step 3. Outline every episode on one page

Write one sentence per episode saying what changes. Each episode should end with a turn: a reveal, a decision, a danger. If two episodes have the same sentence, merge them.

Decide where the story pauses for viewers who might later pay to continue. Your last free episode should end on your strongest turn.

Step 4. Write the scripts

One episode is only about 150 to 400 spoken words. Open in the middle of the action, keep each scene to a single purpose, and cut explanations. Show with action instead of telling.

Write short lines. Short dialogue is easier for AI voices and easier to read in subtitles.

Step 5. Design your characters and look

Write a short description of each main character (age, face, clothes, hair, one memorable detail) and a style description (for example “soft cinematic light, warm colours”). Reuse exactly the same text every time you generate a shot so characters look the same from scene to scene.

Only use faces, voices and music you have the right to use. Do not copy a real person’s face or voice without permission.

Step 6. Generate the shots

Use your chosen AI video tools to make each shot from your script, vertical 9:16. Generate more than you need and pick the best. Keep each shot short; stitching many short shots is easier than one long one.

Check the terms of every tool you use, including whether commercial use is allowed. You are responsible for following them.

Step 7. Add voice, music and subtitles

Record or generate dialogue and keep it clearly louder than the music. Many people watch with the sound off, so prepare subtitles. Dramatubi accepts WebVTT (.vtt) subtitle files for each episode.

Step 8. Edit and export

Cut the episode in any video editor, trim the first seconds so the hook lands immediately, and export vertical, 1080 × 1920 or smaller, 24–30 fps, under the current limits (180 seconds and 500 MB per episode; the upload page shows the exact numbers).

Watch the exported file on a phone before you upload.

Step 9. Create the drama on Dramatubi

Sign in, open the menu and choose Become a creator (you only do this once). Then open Creator Studio and create a drama: a title, a synopsis of at least 40 characters, one to three genres, a vertical poster (2:3, for example 1000 × 1500, JPG/PNG/WebP up to 10 MB), and an honest statement of how AI was used.

Add an episode for each part, give each a title, and upload its video. If the Upload button is missing, ask the Dramatubi team to enable uploads for your account.

Step 10. Submit for review and publish

Press Submit for review. A moderator checks the synopsis, the AI label, the video and the rights. If something needs fixing you get a note saying what, and you resubmit. When it is approved it goes live and your public creator profile appears.

After it is live, share it with the Share button, read your views in Studio, and start planning the next season.

Checklist before you submit

Clear title and synopsis. Vertical poster you have rights to. Honest AI label. At least one episode with a processed video. Subtitles if you have them. Nothing copied from others. Nothing unsafe. Our Community guidelines list the full rules.
